History in general can be viewed as a pendulum swinging back and forth between two philosophies; on one end society has believed that life is to be endured with little hope for enjoyment and on the other society frees itself of this idea to explore the realms of imagination. Like the fuel gauge of an automobile the motivation of humanity in general to journey beyond the immediate need to survive has swung from full to empty and back again.
